Telegram error EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED: what it means and how to fix it

EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED means Telegram refused the email address you gave it for login or account setup. Telegram does not publish the exact reason, so the practical fix is to try a different, mainstream email address that is not linked to another Telegram account.

What it means

EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED is an error returned by Telegram's servers and shown to you as a popup in the app. Telegram's API documentation describes it only as "the specified email cannot be used to complete the operation". It does not say why an address was rejected.

The error is tied to the step where Telegram verifies an email, which happens when you set up or change a login email and when you log in using email. Telegram has no help page for it, so the causes below are drawn from the API documentation and from reports on Telegram's bug tracker. Treat them as likely explanations, not confirmed rules.

Symptoms and causes

You are likely dealing with this problem if:

  • You log in with your phone number, choose email login, enter the correct email code, and the popup EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED appears. Login does not finish.
  • You go to Settings, switch to email login, add an email address, and the popup appears with no other detail.

The usual causes, most common first:

The email is already linked to another Telegram account
A bug report about adding an already-linked address describes this as the trigger. The report (38373) is titled as a request to explain the error in a user-friendly way, so it asks for a clearer message rather than reporting a fault in the error itself.
Email verification failed several times
A Telegram admin replied on a bug report that the error likely happens when email verification fails several times. This is an admin comment, not official documentation, and it suggests the address may be blocked for that account.
Telegram rejects the address or its domain
The API wording allows for this, but no official list of blocked addresses or domains was found.
A glitch in the app
One user reported that reinstalling fixed it. This is a single anecdote.

How to fix it

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.

1.Use a different email address

Easy

The API documentation says the address cannot be used, and a Telegram admin suggested changing the email. A mainstream provider that you have never used on another Telegram account is the best candidate.

  1. Pick an address from a major email provider that you control and can open right now.
  2. Check that this address is not already used as a login email on another Telegram account of yours.
  3. Enter the new address in the login screen, or in Settings if you are changing the email there, and enter the code Telegram sends to it.

2.Update Telegram

Easy

Updating is harmless and worth doing, but do not expect it to cure the error. Bug report 38373 was marked fixed in Android version 13.1.0.7205, and since it asked for a clearer explanation, the update may only show a message naming the cause, such as an email already linked to another account. The report does not describe the fix.

  1. Open the Telegram page in Google Play (or your device's app store) and install any available update.
  2. Open Telegram, then repeat the login or the email setup. If the message is now more specific, follow what it says.

3.Reinstall Telegram

ModerateChanges settings

A user on the bug tracker said uninstalling, restarting the phone and reinstalling cleared the error. It is anecdotal, so try it after the steps above.

Before you start: Reinstalling does not delete your account, but you will need to log in again. Before you start, make sure you can still receive a login code, either on another device where Telegram is signed in or by whichever method your account allows. If your account requires email login, you also need access to that email.

  1. Uninstall Telegram from your phone.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Install Telegram again from the official app store and log in.

Check that it worked

  • You can finish the login or save the new email in Settings without the EMAIL_NOT_ALLOWED popup.
  • Telegram sends and accepts the verification code, and your chats load normally.

If it still fails

  • Try the other email address on a different network (for example mobile data instead of Wi-Fi) to rule out a connection problem on your side.
  • Telegram has not published the rules for blocked addresses, whether a block is temporary, or how to lift it, so waiting and trying again later is reasonable.
  • Use the official Telegram support options and give them the exact error text. Never share login codes or your password with anyone who contacts you claiming to be Telegram support. You can also read the discussion on the Telegram Bug Tracker reports listed in the sources.

Questions

Does the same error happen on iPhone or desktop?

The reports found are from Telegram for Android. Whether iOS, desktop or third-party apps behave the same way is unconfirmed.

Will the error text change in newer versions?

Possibly. The reports are mostly from 2024 and 2025, and the wording of the popup may differ between app versions.
