Minecraft Forge "Game crashed, Exit code: 1": how to fix it

"Exit code: 1" only means the Java process running Minecraft with Forge stopped with an error. It does not name the cause. The logs will, and the most common culprits in the reports are a graphics driver crash (especially AMD), a bad or mismatched mod, the wrong Java version, or a broken Forge install.

What it means

When the Minecraft Launcher shows Game crashed with Exit code: 1, the game process (Java, started with Forge) ended with a non-zero status. Exit code 1 is a generic failure. It is not a specific Forge error, and no official page defines it, so the number itself will not tell you what to fix.

The useful information is in the crash report or log files. Start there, because they usually point straight at the driver, a mod, or Java. The fixes below go from quick checks to bigger changes.

Symptoms and causes

You are likely dealing with this problem if:

  • The game window closes or never appears after you press Play.
  • The launcher shows a "Game crashed" dialog with Exit code: 1.
  • It started right after installing Forge or adding mods.
  • In some reports it happens with no mods at all.

The usual causes, most common first:

Graphics driver crash (often AMD)
The Java crash log shows a "Problematic frame" inside a driver DLL such as atio6axx.dll during window creation. In one Forge Forums thread a community manager advised updating to the stable WHQL driver; in another, reinstalling AMD Adrenaline and updating from inside it fixed the crash for two users, though the root cause was never confirmed.
Wrong, conflicting or incomplete mods
A mod built for another Minecraft or Forge version, a Fabric mod placed on Forge, or a missing library mod can crash the launch. In the forum thread, emptying the mods folder let the game start for some users.
Wrong Java version or architecture
Each Minecraft and Forge release expects a particular Java version, and a 32-bit Java or a bad Java path set in the launcher can also break the start.
Broken Forge install or damaged game files
In one thread, deleting the Forge files and installing Forge again fixed the crash.

How to fix it

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.

1.Read the actual error in the logs

Easy

Exit code 1 is generic, so the log tells you which of the fixes below to use.

  1. Open the .minecraft folder and look at the newest file in crash-reports.
  2. Also open logs/latest.log, and look for any hs_err_pid*.log file in the game folder.
  3. If a "Problematic frame" line names a DLL such as atio6axx.dll (AMD), nvoglv64.dll (NVIDIA) or an Intel ig...icd64.dll, the graphics driver is the cause: go to the driver fix. If the log names a mod, go to the mods fix.

2.Update the graphics driver

Easy

Driver crashes during window creation were the most common cause in the Forge threads that were checked.

  1. Download the current stable (WHQL) driver from your GPU maker and install it.
  2. For AMD, two users in a forum thread fixed it by reinstalling AMD Adrenaline, updating the drivers from inside it, and rebooting.
  3. Restart the PC and launch Minecraft again.

3.Test without mods, then add them back

Easy

A single mismatched mod or missing dependency is enough to cause exit code 1.

  1. Move everything out of the mods folder into a temporary folder and launch Forge alone.
  2. If it starts, move mods back in small batches and launch after each batch.
  3. For each mod, check that it matches your exact Minecraft and Forge versions, is a Forge mod (not Fabric), and that its required library mods are present.

4.Match Java to your Minecraft and Forge version

Moderate

A Java version the game or Forge does not support, or a 32-bit Java, can stop the game from starting.

  1. Look at the Minecraft minimums in the Minecraft Wiki Update Java page: 1.12 to 1.16.5 needs Java 8 or newer, 1.17 to 1.17.1 needs Java 16 or newer, 1.18 to 1.20.4 needs Java 17 or newer, 1.20.5 to 1.21.11 needs Java 21 or newer, and since 26.1 Java 25 or newer. These are Minecraft's minimums, not what Forge supports.
  2. Older Forge builds can be stricter than those minimums. Forge for older versions is commonly run on a specific Java (for example Java 8 for 1.12.2 to 1.16.5 and Java 17 for 1.18 to 1.20.4), and a newer JDK may itself cause exit code 1. Check the Forge installer or the download page for your exact release to see which Java it expects. The Forge docs only list a 64-bit Java 21 JDK, which applies to current versions.
  3. Install a 64-bit JDK of the matching version (for example Eclipse Temurin).
  4. In the Minecraft Launcher, open Installations, edit your Forge profile, expand More Options and check Java Executable. Clear it, or point it to the correct 64-bit Java, if you overrode it earlier.

5.Reinstall Forge

ModerateChanges settings

A damaged Forge install fixed the crash in one reported case.

Before you start: Back up your saves folder and your mods before deleting anything.

  1. Close the launcher. In .minecraft/versions/, delete the Forge version folder, and remove the Forge libraries.
  2. Download the Forge installer that matches your Minecraft version from the official Forge site and run it again.
  3. Launch the new Forge profile with no mods first.

6.Try another launcher

Moderate

If the game starts elsewhere, the fault is tied to the launcher setup rather than the game or the PC.

  1. Install a launcher such as CurseForge, MultiMC or Prism and create a Forge instance with the same Minecraft version.
  2. Launch it without mods, then add mods as in the mods fix.

7.Create a fresh installation (last resort)

AdvancedChanges settings

A clean setup rules out damaged files, but several forum users found that deleting .minecraft did not help, which points to a driver or Java problem instead.

Before you start: Copy your saves folder somewhere safe first. Deleting .minecraft removes worlds, settings and mods.

  1. Back up .minecraft/saves.
  2. Create a new Java Edition installation, or reinstall the game, then install Forge again and test with no mods.

Check that it worked

  • The Minecraft Launcher starts your Forge profile and the game window opens without the Game crashed dialog.
  • A new world loads and you can play for a few minutes with your mods enabled.

If it still fails

  • Copy the first lines of the newest crash report and any hs_err_pid*.log, then search for the exact error text or ask on the Forge Forums with the full log.
  • If the problem persists with no mods and a clean Forge install, suspect the graphics driver or Java first, especially on older GPUs without a current driver.

Questions

Does exit code 1 mean Forge itself is broken?

Not necessarily. It is a generic Java failure, and in the checked reports it was often tied to a graphics driver or mods.

Should I delete the whole .minecraft folder?

Only as a last resort and after backing up saves. Several users reported that it made no difference.
