BattlEye error in DayZ: how to fix service, driver and kick messages

"BattlEye error" in DayZ is a family of messages, not one fault. Some mean the BattlEye service can't install or start on your PC, others are server kicks. Verifying game files, clearing the BattlEye service folder and checking antivirus exceptions solves most of the first group.

What it means

BattlEye is the anti-cheat DayZ uses. It has a part on your PC (a Windows service called BEService, which loads a kernel driver, BEDaisy.sys) and a part on the server. If the PC part can't be installed, started or initialized, DayZ stops before you join anything. If it starts but the server rejects what it sees, you get kicked.

So the first job is to read the exact message. The symptoms below fall into those two groups, and the fixes are labelled to match. The vendor's BattlEye Support FAQ is the main reference. No Bohemia or DayZ page covers these messages, so the mod and server-mismatch advice comes from a third-party guide, iTechGuides.

Symptoms and causes

You are likely dealing with this problem if:

  • "Failed to install BattlEye Service" or "BattlEye Service installation failed"
  • "Failed to start BattlEye Service", "BattlEye Service startup failed", or the game stuck on "Starting BattlEye Service…"
  • "Failed to initialize BattlEye Service" with Driver Load Error (1275) or (577), Kernel Debugging enabled, or Windows Test-Signing Mode not supported; also "BattlEye initialization failed"
  • Kicks from a server: Client not responding, Query Timeout, Bad Client Version, Bad Service Version, Corrupted Memory #0 or #X, Corrupted Data, Corrupted System Integrity

The usual causes, most common first:

Security software or permissions blocking BattlEye
Antivirus, a firewall or missing permissions can block BEService.exe or BEService_x64.exe, or the BattlEye service folder can be damaged.
Missing or outdated BattlEye files
The BattlEye files may be absent or old, or the install ran without administrator rights.
Network problems
Client not responding and Query Timeout kicks point to an unstable connection, outdated router firmware or an incompatible program such as Cucusoft Net Guard.
Client and server mismatch
A different game branch, a different mod list, or damaged or missing .bisign signatures can get you kicked (secondary source: iTechGuides).
System conflicts
Windows 11 Hardware-enforced Stack Protection causes error 1275, missing SHA-2 support on Windows 7 causes 577, kernel debugging or test-signing mode blocks initialization, and MSI Dragon Center or MSI SDK causes Corrupted Memory #0.
Corrupt game files, memory or system files
Corrupted Data and Corrupted Memory #X relate to damaged files or memory. Corrupted System Integrity relates to damaged or modified Windows files.
An actual BattlEye ban
A Global Ban can't be lifted by a server owner, and reinstalling the game doesn't clear it.

How to fix it

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.

1.Close other programs and restart the PC

Easy

A leftover process or half-started service can cause start-up failures, and a restart clears it.

  1. Close Steam, DayZ and any other running programs, then restart Windows.
  2. Launch DayZ again and try to join a server.

2.Verify the DayZ game files in Steam

Easy

This restores missing BattlEye files and helps with Bad Client Version kicks.

  1. In Steam, right-click DayZ in your library and choose Properties.
  2. Open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files.
  3. If you see Corrupted Data, the BattlEye FAQ calls for a clean reinstall of the game instead.

3.Fix BattlEye service install or start errors

ModerateChanges settings

Use this for the install, start and initialize messages. It removes a possibly damaged service folder so it can be rebuilt.

Before you start: Only delete the BattlEye folder named below, nothing else in Common Files. Adding antivirus exceptions only for the BattlEye files is enough; do not turn protection off.

  1. Add BEService.exe, BEService_x64.exe and the BattlEye service folder to the exceptions of your antivirus and firewall.
  2. Close Steam and DayZ completely.
  3. In File Explorer, delete this folder:
    Text
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye
  4. Start DayZ again. The service folder is rebuilt on launch. If it still fails, run the BattlEye launcher as administrator.
  5. As a last resort the FAQ lists a Windows repair reinstall.

4.Reinstall BattlEye manually

Moderate

This fixes a missing install, including the case where you earlier clicked "Do not ask me again" on the install prompt.

  1. Open the game's installation folder, then its battleye subfolder.
  2. Right-click Install_BattlEye.bat and choose Run as administrator.
  3. For "BattlEye initialization failed", the FAQ also says to delete the BattlEye folder under AppData\Local\[game name] and install Microsoft's root certificate update KB 2813430.

5.Driver Load Error 1275 on Windows 11

ModerateChanges settings

Windows 11's Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection can stop the BattlEye driver from loading. Turning it off is a workaround, not a real fix.

Before you start: This lowers a Windows protection. I could not confirm any BattlEye statement that it is harmless, so treat it as a security downgrade. Do it only if the message says Driver Load Error (1275), and turn the setting back on once a fix is released (the BattlEye FAQ is understood to say Microsoft must ship that fix; check the live FAQ for its status).

  1. Confirm the message reads exactly "Failed to initialize BattlEye Service: Driver Load Error (1275)". For any other message, skip this fix.
  2. If Windows shows a popup about the driver, click Disable and reboot.
  3. Otherwise open Windows Security, find the Core isolation settings, and set Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection to Off. Reboot.
  4. Later, check the BattlEye FAQ for the release of a fix. When it is available, return to the same setting and switch it back to On.

6.Driver Load Error 577 on Windows 7

Moderate

Windows 7 needs SHA-2 code-signing support to load the driver.

  1. Fully update Windows 7, or install Microsoft's SHA-2 code-signing update, then retry.

7.Turn off kernel debugging or test-signing mode

AdvancedBack up first

BattlEye refuses to start while either is enabled. They are two separate settings, so switch off only the one named in your message: "Kernel Debugging enabled" or "Windows Test-Signing Mode not supported".

Before you start: bcdedit edits the boot configuration. Write down or save the current output of bcdedit /enum before changing anything, so you can restore it. Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell. I did not read Microsoft's bcdedit page for this article, so check the options with bcdedit /? if your output looks different.

  1. Open Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell as administrator and list the current boot settings. Save the output.
    Command Promptrun as administrator
    bcdedit /enum
  2. If the message says Kernel Debugging enabled, turn kernel debugging off:
    Command Promptrun as administrator
    bcdedit /debug off
  3. If the message says Windows Test-Signing Mode not supported, turn test-signing off:
    Command Promptrun as administrator
    bcdedit /set testsigning off
  4. Reboot and start DayZ again.
  5. If you had enabled signature enforcement to be disabled because a hardware driver needs it, check the hardware vendor for a newer driver that is properly signed instead of keeping test-signing on.

8.Fix Client not responding and Query Timeout kicks

Easy

These are connection-quality problems far more often than game problems.

  1. Use a wired connection if you can, and update the router or modem firmware.
  2. Stop Cucusoft Net Guard if it is installed.
  3. Pause VPNs, traffic filters and large downloads while playing.
  4. Join a few different servers. If only one kicks you, the problem is likely on that server's side.

9.Fix Corrupted Memory and System Integrity kicks

ModerateChanges settings

Each message points to a different cause, so match the step to the message.

Before you start: Back up important files before a Windows repair reinstall.

  1. Corrupted Memory #0: uninstall MSI Dragon Center and MSI SDK, or update to Windows 10 version 2004 or later.
  2. Corrupted Memory #X: scan for malware and test your RAM with a tool such as Memtest86.
  3. Corrupted System Integrity: run an antivirus scan and repair system files as in Microsoft KB 929833 and KB 947821.
  4. If none of that helps, the FAQ's fallback for all three is a Windows repair reinstall.

10.Match your version and mods to the server

Easy

Bad version and mod-signature kicks mean your client differs from the server (secondary source: iTechGuides).

  1. In Steam, open DayZ Properties, then Betas, and select the branch the server runs.
  2. Compare your mod list with the server's, remove old mod copies and let them download again.
  3. Do not copy signature files from other versions or rename files to get around a kick.

11.If you have a Global Ban

Easy

Only BattlEye can lift it; reinstalling or asking the server owner will not.

  1. Contact BattlEye support through their official channel on battleye.com.

Check that it worked

  • DayZ gets past "Starting BattlEye Service…" and reaches the main menu without a BattlEye message.
  • You can join a server and stay connected for several minutes without a kick.
  • If you changed bcdedit settings, bcdedit /enum in an administrator prompt no longer shows debug or testsigning set to Yes.

If it still fails

  • Note the exact message and try a different server, to separate a local fault from a server-specific one.
  • Check the live BattlEye Support FAQ entry for your exact message, then contact BattlEye support.
  • For kicks tied to a specific modded server, ask that server's admins which branch and mod versions they require.
