BattlEye error in Arma Reforger: how to fix "Failed to install BattlEye Service"
Arma Reforger uses the BattlEye anti-cheat service, and when the game cannot install or start it, the game closes at launch or shows "Failed to install BattlEye Service". The most common cause is a broken BattlEye install in the game folder, so verifying game files and then reinstalling BattlEye with the bundled scripts is the usual fix. These steps come from community sources, not from BattlEye or Bohemia Interactive documentation.

What it means
BattlEye is the anti-cheat service that Arma Reforger runs on PC. Before you get into a game, it has to be installed, updated and started. If any of those steps fails, the game either shuts down straight away or shows a message such as "Failed to install BattlEye Service", sometimes with a code in brackets.
I could not find an official BattlEye or Bohemia Interactive page for this error, so the game-specific fixes below are community-reported (a hosting company's blog, a third-party guide and a Steam thread). Some of them worked for some people and not for others, so work down the list and stop when the game starts. The one vendor page used here is Microsoft's, for the Windows test-signing check.
Errors that appear after you are already in a server, such as being kicked with a timeout, are a different problem, usually network related, and are not covered here. For a similar service and driver problem in another game, see BattlEye error in DayZ.
Symptoms and causes
You are likely dealing with this problem if:
- Arma Reforger closes immediately after you press Play.
- A message says "Failed to install BattlEye Service", sometimes with a code such as (4, 50000570).
- BattlEye fails to update when the game starts.
- After a manual workaround, the code changes to something else, for example (4, 40000430).
The usual causes, most common first:
- Broken or incomplete BattlEye install
- The files in the game's
BattlEyefolder are damaged or missing. Every source I found lists this as the most common cause. - Corrupted game files
- Damaged files elsewhere in the installation can stop BattlEye from starting.
- Antivirus or firewall blocking BattlEye
- Security software may block or quarantine
BEService*.exeor the BattlEye folder, or Windows Firewall may block the game, Steam and BattlEye. - Network or DNS problems
- If BattlEye cannot reach its update servers, the update fails and the service does not start.
- Outdated drivers or test-signing mode
- Outdated graphics drivers and Windows test-signing mode are cited as possible causes of BattlEye driver problems.
- A bad BEService file shipped with the game
- A Steam user reported a roughly 15 MB
BEService_x64.exefilled with empty data and said a later update fixed it. I could not confirm this independently.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.
1.Restart the PC and relaunch
A half-installed service or a pending update can clear after a reboot.
- Close Arma Reforger and Steam completely.
- Restart Windows, then start the game again.
2.Verify the game files in Steam
This re-downloads damaged files, including the BattlEye files, and is the simplest repair.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Arma Reforger, then choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait until it finishes, then launch the game.
3.Allow the game and BattlEye through the firewall and antivirus
Security software sometimes blocks or quarantines the BattlEye service file.
Before you start: Only add exceptions for the game's own folder. Do not switch off Windows Firewall or your antivirus permanently.
- Open Windows Security, then Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall.
- Make sure Arma Reforger, Steam and BattlEye are allowed on both Private and Public networks.
- In your antivirus, check the quarantine or protection history for
BEServicefiles and restore them if they were removed. - Add the BattlEye executable in the Arma Reforger game folder to your antivirus exclusions, then run Verify integrity of game files again and launch the game.
4.Reinstall BattlEye with the bundled scripts
This replaces a broken BattlEye service with a fresh one. In one Steam thread it only partly helped, but it is the most direct fix for a broken install.
- Open the game's
BattlEyefolder: in Steam, right-click Arma Reforger, choose Manage, then Browse local files, and open theBattlEyefolder. - Right-click
Uninstall_BattlEye.batand choose Run as administrator. - Restart the PC.
- Right-click
Install_BattlEye.batand choose Run as administrator. - Start Arma Reforger.
5.Fix DNS and network settings if BattlEye cannot update
If the error appears while BattlEye is updating, a DNS or network stack problem may be the reason. One guide says this helped some users and not others.
Before you start: Note your current DNS settings before changing them so you can switch back. The reset commands change network settings and need a reboot.
- Set your adapter's DNS servers to
8.8.8.8(preferred) and8.8.4.4(alternate) in your network adapter's IPv4 properties. - Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands one by one.
ipconfig /flushdns netsh winsock reset netsh int ip reset - Restart the PC and launch the game.
6.Update the graphics driver and Windows
Outdated drivers are cited as a possible cause of BattlEye driver problems.
- Download the latest graphics driver from your GPU maker's official site and choose a clean installation if the installer offers it.
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, and install any pending updates.
- Restart and try the game.
7.Check that Windows test-signing mode is off
BattlEye's driver may fail to load if Windows is in test-signing mode. A Steam user reported that this did not help in their case, so treat it as a check, not a likely fix.
Before you start: This edits boot configuration. Change it only if the first command shows test signing is on, and do not change anything else. Microsoft warns that wrong BCDEdit /set changes can make a computer inoperable. If Windows refuses the change because of Secure Boot policy, stop there rather than changing firmware settings.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run
bcdeditto see the current boot settings. Look fortestsigning. A "Test Mode" watermark in the lower right corner of the desktop also means it is on.bcdedit - Only if
testsigningis set toYes, turn it off and restart the PC.Bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING OFF
8.Remove conflicting kernel-level software and check the BattlEye service
Another kernel-level program, such as a separate anti-cheat client, may clash with BattlEye. This comes from user reports, and starting the service by hand is also user-reported.
Before you start: Only uninstall software you recognise and no longer need.
- Uninstall other anti-cheat or kernel-level tools you do not need, then restart the PC.
- Press WinR, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find the BattlEye service in the list. If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start.
- Launch Arma Reforger again.
Check that it worked
- Arma Reforger starts and reaches the main menu without closing or showing a BattlEye message.
- You can join a BattlEye-protected server without the install or update error appearing.
If it still fails
- Check whether the game has had a recent update. One Steam user reported a broken shipped
BEServiceexecutable that was fixed in a later update, though this is not confirmed. - Note the exact message and code (for example (4, 50000570)). The code is useful when you ask for help, but its meaning is not officially documented.
- Do not copy BattlEye files from other games. A Steam user said it worked for them, but it is unofficial and another user got a new error from it.
- Ask in the Arma Reforger discussions on Steam or contact Bohemia Interactive support, including the code and what you already tried. Windows event logs can help too: see Windows 11 error logs.
Questions
Is this the same as being kicked from a server by BattlEye?
No. This article is about BattlEye failing to install or start. Kicks during play, such as timeouts, are more likely network related and have different causes.
Does the error code tell me exactly what is wrong?
Not reliably. Code meanings are not officially documented in the sources I found, so treat the code as a hint and follow the steps in order.
