Epic Games error EOS-ERR-1603 (installation of Epic Online Services failed): how to fix it

EOS-ERR-1603 means the Epic Online Services component could not be installed by Windows Installer. The fix community guides name first is turning on the .NET Framework 3.5 Windows feature, then retrying.

What it means

People often search for this as "Epic Games Launcher error 1603", but the code shown is EOS-ERR-1603. The number at the end is the generic Windows Installer (MSI) code ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE, which Microsoft describes as a fatal error during installation. It does not say what went wrong, only that the installer gave up.

In the Epic Games Launcher it points to the Epic Online Services (EOS) component failing to install. One community guide, KeenGamer's, uses Fall Guys as its example of a game where this happens.

The fixes below come from that community guide. Epic's own help page could not be checked while writing this, so results can vary from one PC to another.

Symptoms and causes

You are likely dealing with this problem if:

  • The launcher or the EOS installer stops with "EOS-ERR-1603" or "Installation of Epic Online Services failed".
  • Windows offers to install .NET Framework 3.5 during the install.
  • The Epic Games Launcher does not finish installing, or a game will not start.

The usual causes, most common first:

.NET Framework 3.5 is turned off
The EOS installer needs this Windows feature, and the community guide names it as the main fix.
The Epic Online Services folder is missing
The folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Epic Online Services is expected to exist. If it is absent, the install can fail.
Something else in the installer
Because 1603 is a generic code, other causes are possible. The steps below are the ones the guide reports working.

How to fix it

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.

1.Turn on .NET Framework 3.5

Easy

The EOS package depends on this feature, so check it first.

  1. Press WinR, type the command below and press Enter.
    Command Prompt
    appwiz.cpl
  2. Click Turn Windows features on or off in the left pane.
  3. Tick .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) and click OK.
  4. Choose Let Windows Update download the files when asked, wait for it to finish, then restart the PC.
  5. Start the Epic Games Launcher or the game again. If Windows prompts you to install .NET 3.5 during the EOS install, accepting it does the same job.

2.Check that the Epic Online Services folder exists

Easy

A missing folder can make the install fail.

  1. Open File Explorer and go to this location.
    Text
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\Epic Online Services
  2. If the Epic Online Services folder is not there, create it inside Epic Games, then restart the PC and retry.

3.Run Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter

Moderate

It looks for problems that block installs and removals, such as a damaged earlier install.

  1. Download Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter (a .diagcab file) from Microsoft's support site, run it and let it check for problems.
  2. Retry the Epic install.

4.Run the EOS installer from a game's folder

Moderate

This is the workaround from KeenGamer's guide. It runs the EOS installer directly instead of through the launcher.

  1. Install the game (the guide uses Fall Guys) through the launcher.
  2. Click Manage > Open Install Location for that game.
  3. Run the EpicOnlineServices installer found in that folder.

5.Reinstall the launcher and Epic Online Services

AdvancedChanges settings

Last resort when a damaged install is the problem.

Before you start: This also removes games installed through the launcher. Back up any game files or saves you want to keep before you start.

  1. Uninstall both Epic Games Launcher and Epic Online Services from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Restart the PC.
  3. Install the launcher again, using the Microsoft Store version as the community guide suggests.

Check that it worked

  • The Epic Games Launcher installs and opens without showing EOS-ERR-1603.
  • The game that triggered the error launches.
  • The Epic Online Services folder exists under C:\Program Files (x86)\Epic Games\.

If it still fails

  • Contact Epic Games support through the Epic Games help site and tell them the exact code, EOS-ERR-1603, and the steps you already tried.
  • If a Visual C++ runtime error shows up instead, see VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll was not found.
