CS2 crashes on startup or won't launch: how to fix it
"CS2 error" is not one error but a label for several different problems. This article covers one of them: Counter-Strike 2 crashes, closes or shows a black screen at launch. Verifying the game files in Steam is a sensible first step; if that fails, work down the list to drivers, security software and a clean reinstall.

What it means
There is no single "CS2 error". Counter-Strike 2 can show several unrelated problems: a crash at launch, an update failure, a missing executable, or the "VAC was unable to verify your game session" message. Each has its own cause, so it helps to know which one you have before changing anything.
This page is about the case where the game will not start properly: the window opens and closes, the screen goes black, or nothing happens after you press Play. The steps go from the quickest and safest to the more involved. Stop as soon as the game runs.
The VAC message is a different problem. It is not a ban: it generally means Valve Anti-Cheat could not confirm your session with Steam, and it needs different steps from the ones below.
Symptoms and causes
You are likely dealing with this problem if:
- The game window appears briefly and then closes.
- A black screen at launch.
- Nothing happens after clicking Play in Steam.
- Steam shows an update error or a missing-executable message for Counter-Strike 2.
The usual causes, most common first:
- Corrupted or missing game files
- Third-party guides list this first. An interrupted update or a disk problem can leave files damaged.
- Bad or outdated launch options
- Launch options left over from CS:GO may cause crashes. This is not confirmed by a vendor page, but clearing them is harmless.
- Outdated or corrupted graphics driver, or a pending Windows update
- CS2 needs a DirectX 11 capable GPU, and an outdated driver or missing Windows update is a listed crash trigger.
- Antivirus or firewall interference
- Security software is listed in third-party guides as a possible blocker of cs2.exe. This is not confirmed by an opened source.
- Hardware problems
- Overclocks or overheating can make the game unstable.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.
1.Verify the game files in Steam
Replaces damaged or missing files. It costs nothing but a few minutes.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files. Wait for it to finish, then start the game.
2.Clear custom launch options
Bad or outdated launch options can cause crashes. This step is not confirmed by a vendor source, but it is safe and easy to undo.
- Right-click Counter-Strike 2 in your Library and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, empty the Launch Options box (copy the text somewhere first if you want to restore it).
- Start the game.
3.Update Windows and the graphics driver, then restart
An outdated or corrupted GPU driver, or a pending Windows update, is a listed crash trigger.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
- Download the latest driver for your graphics card from the GPU maker's own website and install it.
- Restart the PC and launch CS2.
4.Change compatibility settings for cs2.exe
Turning off fullscreen optimizations is reported to stop some launch crashes.
- In Steam, right-click Counter-Strike 2, choose Manage > Browse local files, then open the
game\bin\win64folder. The main folder is usually namedCounter-Strike Global Offensive, and its location depends on your Steam library. - Right-click
cs2.exeand choose Properties, then the Compatibility tab. - Tick Disable fullscreen optimizations and click Apply. Test the game.
- If it still crashes, tick Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose Windows 8, then test again.
5.Check your antivirus and firewall
Security software may interfere with the game. Guides suggest adding exceptions, though this is not confirmed by a vendor source.
Before you start: Do not turn protection off. Add exceptions only for folders you trust.
- Open your antivirus protection history and check whether
cs2.exewas blocked. Restore it if so. - Add
cs2.exeand your Steam folder to the antivirus and firewall exceptions, then launch the game.
6.Undo overclocks and check temperatures
An unstable overclock or overheating can crash a game at start.
- Reset your CPU, GPU and memory to default speeds in the BIOS or the maker's tool.
- Check temperatures while the system is under load and clean dust from fans if they are high.
7.Reinstall Counter-Strike 2 cleanly
A last resort when the files are damaged beyond what verification can repair.
Before you start: Settings stored in your Steam account are kept online, but note any custom config files you want to keep before deleting the game folder. The download is large, about 85 GB of free space is listed as a requirement.
- In Steam, right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Manage > Uninstall.
- Delete any leftover Counter-Strike folder in your Steam library's
steamapps\commondirectory. - Install the game again, preferably onto an SSD.
Check that it worked
- CS2 opens to the main menu and stays open for several minutes.
- You can load into a map or practice match without the window closing.
If it still fails
- Write down the exact error text or what happens at launch, and your Windows and driver versions.
- Open a support request at help.steampowered.com and include that text.
- If the message is about VAC, update, or a missing executable, look for a guide for that specific message instead.
Questions
Is the VAC message a ban?
No. It generally means Valve Anti-Cheat could not authenticate your session with Steam, usually because of a problem on your side.
What are the minimum requirements?
ProSettings lists Windows 10, a 4-thread CPU, 8 GB RAM, a DirectX 11 GPU with 1 GB VRAM and 85 GB of free disk space.
