CS2 crashing on launch or in game: how to find the cause and fix it
CS2 has no single crash error, so the cause has to be narrowed down. Start with Steam's Verify integrity of game files, then update your graphics driver and Windows. If it still crashes, clear the shader cache, adjust fullscreen optimizations, lower graphics settings and undo any overclock.

What it means
Counter-Strike 2 can crash in several ways: it closes without a message, freezes and then disappears, or never gets past the launch. There is no standard error code for this, so the fix depends on when the crash happens and what is behind it.
The steps below go from the quickest and safest to the more involved. Most of them come from community troubleshooting guides rather than Valve, so treat them as things worth trying, not guaranteed cures. If other games also crash on startup, see games crashing on startup. For graphics-specific errors, see DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG.
Symptoms and causes
You are likely dealing with this problem if:
- CS2 closes or freezes right after you press Play
- The game crashes in the middle of a match
- The game crashes when you alt-tab
- The game crashes while a map is loading
- Crashes started after a game update
The usual causes, most common first:
- Corrupted or missing game files or cache
- Damaged game files or a corrupted shader cache are the most common cause named in community guides.
- Outdated or faulty graphics driver
- An old or broken GPU driver is the next most frequent culprit.
- Fullscreen optimizations or overlays
- Windows fullscreen optimizations and overlay programs can interfere with the game.
- Settings too high for the hardware
- High graphics presets on a weak PC, low RAM or little free disk space can crash the game. The Steam store page lists 8 GB of RAM and 85 GB of storage.
- Background programs
- Other apps competing for resources can contribute.
- Overclocking or unstable hardware
- Unstable CPU or memory settings, or failing hardware, can cause crashes.
- Outdated Windows
- Missing Windows updates are listed as a possible cause.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.
1.Verify the game files in Steam
Repairs damaged or missing game files, the most common cause.
- Open your Steam Library, right-click Counter-Strike 2 and choose Properties.
- Go to Installed Files and click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for it to finish. Verification can take a while, so it is sensible to leave the PC alone until it is done.
- Exit Steam fully, restart the PC and launch CS2 again.
2.Update the graphics driver and Windows
Outdated drivers or Windows are a common cause.
- NVIDIA: download the latest driver from nvidia.com or use GeForce Experience. AMD: open Radeon Software, go to Updates and click Check Updates, or download from AMD's site.
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, click Check for updates and repeat until nothing new appears.
- Restart and test CS2.
3.Clear the DirectX shader cache
A corrupted shader cache can crash the game.
- Press WinS, type delete temporary files and open the result.
- Tick only Windows Update Cleanup and DirectX Shader Cache, then click Remove files.
4.Disable fullscreen optimizations
Helped some players, though the evidence is anecdotal.
- Right-click
cs2.exein the game folder, usuallysteamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\game\bin\win64, and choose Properties. - On the Compatibility tab, tick Disable fullscreen optimizations and click Apply.
5.Close background apps and lower graphics settings
Frees resources and reduces strain on weak hardware.
- Press CtrlShiftEsc to open Task Manager and close apps you do not need.
- In CS2 open Settings, then Video, then Advanced Video, and drop the preset one level.
- Make sure the drive has plenty of free space.
6.Undo overclocks and check temperatures
Unstable overclocks can crash demanding games.
Before you start: Note your current BIOS or tuning-software settings before changing them.
- Return CPU, GPU and memory to default speeds in your BIOS or tuning software, then test CS2.
- Check that temperatures are reasonable while playing.
7.Reinstall CS2
Last resort if nothing else worked.
Before you start: Reinstalling downloads the whole game again, so allow time and disk space. Your account data is stored by Steam, not locally.
- Uninstall CS2 in Steam, then delete anything left in the CS2 folder.
- Reinstall it, preferably on an SSD with plenty of free space.
Check that it worked
- CS2 starts and loads a map without closing
- You can play a full match and alt-tab without a crash
If it still fails
- Contact Steam Support through the CS2 help page and describe when the crash happens.
- Some crashes may need a game update from Valve, so check again after the next CS2 update.
- If other games crash too, suspect hardware and test memory and temperatures.
