Roblox error code 279: how to fix "Disconnected" and failed connections
Roblox error code 279 means your device could not make or keep a connection to the game server. The usual causes are your network, a firewall or antivirus, a browser extension or an outdated app, so work through those in order. If Roblox itself is having an outage, waiting is the only fix.

What it means
Error 279 appears as a "Disconnected" message reading "Error Code: 279", often followed by "(ID=17: Connection attempt failed)". The Roblox client tried to reach the game server and the connection either did not get through or did not hold.
The cause is normally somewhere between you and Roblox rather than in the game itself: a weak connection, something blocking Roblox traffic, a browser add-on, or an old version of the app. Occasionally Roblox's own servers are the problem, which takes a minute to check, so start there.
Symptoms and causes
You are likely dealing with this problem if:
- A dialog saying "Disconnected. Error Code: 279" when you join a game
- The same message appearing partway through a session
- Often shown together with "ID=17: Connection attempt failed"
The usual causes, most common first:
- Unstable or slow internet connection
- A weak or dropping connection, or a problem at your internet provider, can stop the client from reaching the server.
- Firewall, antivirus, router or ISP blocking Roblox
- Security software or a router can block Roblox traffic. Help Desk Geek notes that Roblox uses UDP ports 49152 to 65535.
- Browser extensions or strict browser security settings
- Ad blockers and other content blockers, or raised security levels, can interfere with launching the game from the browser.
- Outdated Roblox app or browser
- An old client or browser may fail to connect properly.
- DNS or IP lease problems
- Bad DNS settings or a stale IP lease can stop the client from reaching the server.
- Roblox server outage
- If Roblox is down, no change on your side will help.
- Corrupted Roblox install files
- A damaged install can fail to connect.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.
1.Check whether Roblox is down, then rejoin
If the service is having problems, nothing on your device will fix it, so rule this out first.
- Open the Roblox status page (or a site like DownDetector) and look for reported problems. If there is an outage, wait and try again later.
- If Roblox looks fine, close the error and try joining the game again.
- Restart your device and your router, then try once more.
2.Update Roblox and your browser
An outdated client or browser can fail to connect.
- On a phone or tablet, open the Play Store or App Store and update the Roblox app.
- On a PC, update your browser to the latest version, then relaunch the game.
3.Test a different connection
This separates a problem with your home connection from a problem with Roblox or your device.
- Switch to wired Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi, or try a phone hotspot or mobile data.
- Run a speed test to confirm the connection is stable.
4.Try another browser or the Store app, and remove extension conflicts
Extensions and browser security settings can block the launch.
- Try Chrome, Firefox or Edge, whichever you are not using now.
- Disable extensions, especially ad blockers, or test in a fresh browser profile.
- Restore the browser's security settings to their defaults.
- On Windows, try the Roblox app from the Microsoft Store instead of the browser launch.
5.Refresh your IP address and DNS cache
Clears a stale IP lease and old DNS entries.
- Open PowerShell as administrator and run these commands one after another. Your connection will drop briefly.
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushDNS - Optionally set your network adapter's DNS servers to
8.8.8.8and8.8.4.4, then try Roblox again.
6.Check the firewall, antivirus and router
Security software or a router can block Roblox's connection.
Before you start: Only turn off a third-party antivirus briefly as a test, and turn it back on straight afterwards. Do not leave it off.
- Open Windows Security, then Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall, and make sure Roblox is allowed on your network type.
- If you use a third-party antivirus, pause it briefly and try joining a game. Whatever the result, re-enable it immediately.
- If that was the cause, add Roblox as an exception in the antivirus instead of leaving protection off.
- Check that your router or firewall is not blocking outbound UDP traffic on ports
49152to65535, which Roblox uses. If you cannot tell, ask your internet provider or the router's manufacturer.
7.Uninstall and reinstall Roblox
Replaces corrupted install files.
- Uninstall Roblox from your device completely.
- Download the installer again from the official Roblox site and install it, then sign in and try a game.
Check that it worked
- You can join a game and stay connected for several minutes without the "Error Code: 279" dialog.
- The error does not return after restarting Roblox.
If it still fails
- Try the game on a completely different network, such as a friend's Wi-Fi, to tell whether your home network or router is the problem.
- If other Roblox games work but one does not, the issue may be with that game, so contact its developer.
- Contact Roblox support through the official Roblox Help Center and include the exact error text and ID.
