Nintendo Switch error code 2005-0003: how to fix a failed download
Error 2005-0003 means your Nintendo Switch could not download software. Nintendo's steps point mostly at the microSD card, so the usual fix is to reseat, test or format the card, after updating the system and restarting the console.

What it means
Error code 2005-0003 appears when the console can't download a game or other software. Nintendo's support page doesn't explain the code itself or list causes. Every step it gives, though, deals with the microSD card or the console's storage, so that's where to look first.
The fixes below follow Nintendo's own order, from the harmless ones (update, restart, redownload) to the ones that wipe the card (format). Your save data stays on the console during all of this.
Symptoms and causes
You are likely dealing with this problem if:
- A game or other software download fails and the screen shows 2005-0003.
- The same download keeps failing after you retry it.
The usual causes, most common first:
- Faulty, corrupted or incompatible microSD card
- Nintendo's steps focus on the card, so this is the most likely cause. Nintendo doesn't state this directly; it is inferred from the troubleshooting order.
- Card capacity doesn't match its label
- A card that reports a different size than printed on it may be counterfeit. Nintendo says to contact the retailer if the label and the capacity shown on the console differ by more than 1 GB.
- Outdated system software or a temporary glitch
- Nintendo has you update and restart the console before anything else, which suggests a software hiccup can trigger the error.
- Console hardware fault
- Nintendo points to this when the error continues with several compatible cards, or when downloading to system memory.
How to fix it
Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and move to deeper repairs; stop as soon as the problem is gone.
1.Update the system and restart the console
Clears out-of-date software and temporary glitches before you touch any hardware.
- Open System Settings, then go to System > System Update and let the console install any update.
- Hold the POWER button for 3 seconds, then choose Power Options > Restart.
2.Redownload the software
Retrying after the update and restart shows whether the error was a one-off.
- On the HOME Menu, open Virtual Game Cards.
- Select your user and the title, then choose Load on This System.
3.Check the card is compatible and reseat it
An unsupported card, or one that isn't seated properly, can't take the download.
- Power the console off completely, then remove the microSD card.
- Check the card type against your console. Switch 2 takes microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Switch takes microSD (up to 2 GB), microSDHC (4 to 32 GB) and microSDXC (64 GB to 2 TB).
- Check the capacity printed on the card matches what the console reports. If they differ by more than 1 GB, contact the retailer you bought it from.
- Reinsert the card with the label facing away from the console, then retry the download.
4.Try a different compatible card
If another card downloads fine, the original card is the problem.
- Power the console off and swap in a different compatible microSD card.
- Try the download again. If it works, the first card may need formatting or replacing.
5.Format the microSD card
Formatting rebuilds the card's file system, which can fix a corrupted card.
Before you start: Formatting erases everything on the card. Copy your screenshots and videos off it first. Downloaded software can be redownloaded afterward, and save data stays on the console.
- Open System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Format microSD Card.
- Follow the prompts, then retry the download.
6.Download to system memory instead
This separates the card from the console as the source of the problem.
- Remove the microSD card and try the download again so it saves to system memory.
- If it succeeds, the card is the likely culprit. If it still fails, the console itself may be at fault.
7.Request console service
Nintendo directs you here when the error persists across several compatible cards, or when you can't test a second card.
- Start from Nintendo's Console repairs page for your region.
- Include one or two of the problem cards with the console, as Nintendo advises.
Check that it worked
- The download completes without showing 2005-0003.
- The game appears on the HOME Menu and launches.
If it still fails
- If the error returns with several compatible cards, or you can't test a second card, the console needs service. Use Nintendo's Console repairs page.
- If a card's capacity differs from its label by more than 1 GB, take it back to the retailer.
- For anything specific to your region, check Nintendo Support for your country.
Questions
Will I lose my save data if I format the microSD card?
According to Nintendo, no: save data stays on the console. The card's contents, including screenshots and videos, are erased, so copy those off first. Downloaded software can be downloaded again.
Does a faster card help?
Nintendo recommends a faster card for better gameplay, but nothing in its 2005-0003 steps says speed causes this error. Compatibility is what matters here.
